If there was a way to loose your brain cells, then this show would be your answer.
Bishoujo Celeb Panchanne is about your average day housewife/mother turned “super heroine” and her daily adventures fighting crime (crime = crazy monsters) and saving the day for the citizens of Tokyo!
As if that summary wasn’t even enough to make you go WTF watching episode one will seal the deal.
I had heard of the show from a few people in a chat I frequent on IRC. I never was interested in the show because, hell, anything with a title ” Bishoujo Celeb Panchanne ” would sound pretty corny. It didn’t help that she was running around in a big tackey, poofy, outfit looking like France’s version of Wonder Woman. But I gave in and finally downloaded episode 1 when it became available on the TokuRider’s bit torrent tracker.
Let’s just say that it was not something I had expected.
If you wanted crack in your Tokusatsu, then you get the crack with a slight dab of some LSD mixed with some herb for the ‘ lets just stare at the tv ‘ experience. Panchanne is a rollercoaster ride of jokes, bad costumes, and pure Japanese humor that all you can do is just sit, have that ‘ wtf ‘ expression, and then at the end of the episode ask yourself ” What in the hell has just happened here? “.
The show opens up in the classic heroine way and starts off normally but the moment the family leaves the house, the story just takes a drastic turn to the right and continues towards of path of craziness and unexplained. To also add to the shows confusing nature, Japan’s newest overexposed comedian, Neko-Hiroshi, plays the role as ” Kami-sama “; a cheap, swindling, deity that gives our heroine the powers of ” Bishoujo Senshi Florence “… except she’s married and old so now she’s the ” Bishoujo Celeb Panchanne “.
Between the ‘nya!’s, weird bondage scene (wait, this is for kids?), and Panchanne’s refusals to fight… you get kind of confused on what the hell is going on.
But by the end, you find out that our ‘alien’ is actually a married (man?) and was kicked out of his home because he was ‘too
fat’ and had to loose weight before coming back home to his husband and kid (right, i’m serious). So, Kami-sama is selling a
Magical Diet Machine that is supposed to make him lose weight but instead does nothing and leaves our resident alien broke, fat, and alone. So he swears to get his money back from Kami-sama, who is using Panchanne as a decoy to get rid of the pesky alien, luckily Panchanne’s motherly and housewive-y instincts come into play saving the day for the alien to return home with money and his family again.
Panchanne’s bizarre and weird. You either take the humor with a grain of salt or you enjoy every moment of it. Its not made for everyone and you basically get the feel for the series within the first ten minutes or so of the show. Between the ‘shoujo’ intro, the weird ass (Japanese) comedy, and scenarios Panchanne is in a field of its own. Die hard fans of old Tokusatsu will love this show since it parodies all the elements of ‘production’ from the 1960s on through the 80s and fans who enjoy Japanese humor will love this show…
… but if you’re just some guy looking for a show to waste thirty minutes on… then Panchanne isn’t for you.
