With Rie gone, Unubore and Saeki wallow in their self misery while working together to solve murders and catch criminals. When a case from 3 years ago resurfaces, the connection between it and Rie starts to surface and Unubore is caught between capturing his true love or arresting her.
Ah, its finally over. What can I say about this drama?
Its definitely something that should be on the watch list of drama fans everywhere. While it falls flat on its feet a few times and has it dry spells in the humor department, the drama never stops being good with its faults. Nagase delivered a great detective, on point with every mannerism Unubore had. You can tell that Nagase had a lot of fun with this character unlike last year with Karei Naru Spy where it seemed like he was fighting to finish the drama like the rest of us.
The rest of the supporting cast was superb, and while my friend couldn’t stand Toma Ikuta, I simply couldn’t get enough of his stupidity. Toma played the hell out of Sadame, the bumbling idiot who can’t act and the younger, over the top, Yozo. His conflict with the gay director who kept hitting on him was absolutely hilarious! Also, Sadame’s willing to be his boytoy to just keep a job and his left-field rejection was one of the highlights of the show that I had to re-watch. Classic Kankuro right there. This drama definitely helped win bonus points for Toma who, after Hana Kimi, was starting to get on my nerves. This role definitely brought back the Box-kun that made me like him in the first place. The rest of the I Am I bar frequenters were a ball and added a bit of character to the show rather than detract from it, something that tends to be a problem in other comedies that have a gang of quirky friends.
While middle half of the show began to dedicate itself to singular character episodes, each episode was entertaining. I didn’t feel that dread of, ” Oh no, its a character centric episode ” because each character had a charisma that made it entertaining to watch. But, that’s something that Kudo Kankuro manages to deliver in all his dramas, side characters that are all as charming as the leads. It’s a cast that manages to come together well and enjoy themselves, reflecting so much on the screen that you want to see how much fun they really had on the show.
With the last episode, didn’t end on the note that I was dreading. I was so happy it stayed neutural and didn’t pull a Hana Kimi on me, because I would have raged HARD. Unubore, despite everything, still ended up being Unubore. I also loved the nod to Mayonaka no Yaji-san Kita-san (a movie directed by Kudo Kankuro) by bringing Nakamura Shichinosuke to play the kabuki dancer who Unubore ‘falls’ in love with until he finds out he’s a man. Both Nagase and Nakamura play the title roles in that movie and it was just absolutely hilarious.
I would say again to everyone that this is something that should be on the watch list of drama fans. While its definitely not a must-see, everyone should experience some Unubore. Also, for those Nagase fans needing something to make up for the horrible Karei Naru Spy, please watch Unubore. Nagase is back and he shines! This was definitely the role he needed.
My only worry though, does Nagase need a Kudo Kankuro drama to bring out his potential or is it that maybe we’re becoming to complacent in his Kankuro-characters?
