Tottori Kennichi, or Dolittle as he’s nicknamed, is a emotionless, straight to business kind of man. He has no compassion or time with humans, but when it comes to animals, he has an uncanny affinity towards them to the point where he is nicknamed Dolittle by his peers. But for those that don’t know him, he’s rumored to be a fake and a scammer who charges outrageous amounts of money for his services. I really had no intentions of watching this drama. Once I found out it was something completely opposite of one of my favorite childhood stories, I quitraeg’d on it… But since the channel I chill out at was capping it and had it up for grabs, I decided to watch it for the hell of it anyway especially after watching hachi: a dog’s tale and baaaaaawing my eyes out.
The plot starts with a young boy watching Hanabishi Masaru, played by Narimiya Hiroki, on TV and his father complaining about the boy’s obsession with animals and the like. When the boy let goes of his cat, the furry critter runs outside and decides to walk on the balcony and eventually slips and falls to be fatally injured. Distraught, the boy visits two veterinarians before being referred to Tottori’s office. Tottori tells them that the cat can be saved but only for 10,000 USD, the father yells in outrage on how the cat isn’t worth that much but Tottori explains that the cat falling from the high-rise and because of the condition the cat is in, the fee is well worth it.
The man’s son eventually gets his stepmom to fork out the money and he performs the surgery, saving the cat’s life. While the cat is going through its slow recovery, doubts of the doctors skill along with added frustration at work causes the man to begin to become more irritated with the situation while, on the other hand, an attorney begins to launch a case against Tottori for the allegations against him and his practice.
Anyway, a whole bunch of shit happens, Tottori manages to prove everyone wrong and continues with his job. There was also this deal with Tajima Asuka (Inoue Mao), Dolittle’s new assistant (because she has to work off her debt to him for saving her horse) and Hanabishi Masaru and yeaaaah blah blah blah.
Medical dramas are not my thing. I really do not like them because they’re all boring and … flat and stupid. Medical dramas in Japan are always about overcoming the odds and proving the system wrong compared to the dramas in America that are all about personal conflict with their jobs and with each other which makes them so much more interesting than their Japanese counterparts. So, while watching Dolittle, I got bored. Even if there’s cute animals and my heart is breaking to see the monkey with the cataracts (reminds me of my little chichi that passed away two years ago with her cataracts) and the cat that is suffering due to the traumatic injury, the characters are still boring and the pace of the story is static and slow and loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong.
Now, I saw my Phillip in this drama and I did perk up at that but I don’t think Mr. Deep-voice Pedobait Trap coupled with cute animals is gonna be enough to keep me watching. Apparently there’s gonna be a love triangle and well… After watching Shun Oguri in Hana Kimi… No, I rather not suffer through that mess again. I’m going to try and sit this one out for the next episode and maybe episode 3, but if I don’t find the show interesting enough I may drop it. For some reason, seeing Shun act like a douchebag asshole isn’t that exciting to watch and watching Narimiya play another charismatic celebrity isn’t that exciting either… maybe because…
I’VE SEEN THESE ROLES TOO MANY TIMES FROM THEM. Give me something new. Please. And if this rival between them is going to be over Inoue Mao’s character I’m gonna fucking raegquit. I wanna see the two go at each other for their differences in ethics not because they wanna bone resident animal assistant.
Anyway.
