Between taking care of his mother, working at his construction job, and finding a new salaryman’s career – Seiji is at his limits. Unfortunately for his family, they have to suffer from the backlash of his breaking point. A father who refuses to acknowledge his mother’s illness, a sister who has her own life to worry about, and a mother who’s slowly losing her sanity; Seiji is about to break down at any moment. Luckily for him he has a job that’s sympathetic to his situation.
Just thoughts, again, this week.
I’m really starting to reach my limit with this drama. Seiji’s not a likable character and when he does something good, he turns around and screws it up all over again to turn around and realize that he was an asshole from the beginning. Seiji means well, but I believe his intentions are more focused on proving his father wrong than helping his mother. Everything he does is because he’s trying to prove something to his father who likes to swing around the chastise sword around his son and complain about his insolence and lack of motivation.
This drama is trying to paint a picture of sympathy for Seiji but all I see is a thick headed adult who seem to have lost his way and doesn’t really know how to find his way back on track. When I see him passed out and exhausted, I feel for him, but when he chews out his mother for being a nuisance, I realize he still has much growing up to do. After he yelled at his mother because he left a job interview to find her, I was turned off by him as a character. Seiji worries about himself first and the others around him second. I don’t feel sorry for him at all, I feel sorry for his mother. Out of everyone in this drama, she’s the one that suffers for her family’s mistakes.
Freeter’s pacing is also dragging along. I don’t understand why its doing so well rating wise but it is. None of the side characters are engaging; we see his construction workers but that’s all they are – his coworkers. We’re about as detached from them as Seiji. Everything goes so slow and conflict that should be resolved quicker is brought up and set aside for some other conflict. How long can Seiji’s father continue this affair and not no one really call him out for it beyond not being their for his wife?
I dunno… Freeter’s train is slowing down with me and Maru’s not enough to keep me watching to find out what douchebaggery Seiji has next up his sleeve.
